Killbox is just the best way, they walk in/to it from any direction, water blocks bugs from getting to point b, flyers dunno if water stops them, never tested due to i dont like to build against water/mountains. However mointains are not a defense option, bugs and your people can walk up very steep cliffs. #2.

Make it quite long (big) so mobs requires time to get around. Of course keep a space open like 2-3 space, so the mobs can get into it and to your people and doesnt attack the fence. Draft them, then give them orders, the same as survivors. What I like to do is shift-click to give them a movement order. That tells them to move there but also attack any enemies they cross paths with along the way. #2.
