Simply put, TFP are focused on implementing their plan of dungeon crawl POIs. The locked doors are not meant to be opened. The picks are intended to open the loot boxes only. Yeah, TFP would rather you just build a few frames up the side of a building and stone axe your way through a window to get to the big loot.

At low levels they are great, but once you get an iron pickaxe or steel pickaxe they no longer seem to be worth the cost. Sure they save time and are quiet, but only with safes. They cost 1 mechanical part and 1 forged iron and are ... Also: If you put 1-2 points in Adv. Engineering and Lockpicking each, you will get your workstations in a timely manner. Usually I have Forge day 2/3, worlbench day 4/5 and cement mixer around day 8-10. Which would mean steel around day 25, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

Sure you can cheat, just do CM for Creative Mode and then bring up the Creative Menu to pop some lockpicks into your inventory. It can be kind of a slippery slope if you don't set rules for yourself, though.

No, on one of my fav. servers settings. They have LCBs or key blocks drop function if you don't login for 10 real life days. So you run into old bases occasionally.
