It depends largely on how tough your beard is. If you have a very thick beard, or your whiskers are very wiry and coarse (or all three), a pre helps the razor do its job. No, you can't lather with your fingers. At least not very well. A good lather is a mixture of soap, water, and air. Your fingers just aren't as good at stirring up that mixture as a brush is. That said, you don't need a lather. There are some decent of non-lathering creams out there.
