That comment made above about failsafe thermostats was just some distracting noise to sift through.Hey, I was wondering if anyone has run into the same problem/found the solution to my overtempting problem. With it parked, just idling, no issues. I'm going to take it to the shop later today or Monday. Just looking for thoughts if anyone has seen this issue.

Well if it's your AC that causing you to overheat then to me that means your cooling system is marginal and the increase in heat load from the AC is overloading it. Hopefully this will fix it. 1700 miles is ridiculous for a thermostat to go bad, but it does happen. Heat the water to the temp the thermostat is supposed to open at, put it into the water and see if it opens. If that checks out OK, I'd give the radiator a good flushing. I replaced it because I had a constant overheating problem whenever idling, which in Houston traffic happens quite frequently. No problems at all when driving, just idling. Flushed out the whole system probably 4 or 5 times. Then replaced the thermostat, radiator, radiator cap, water pump, all hoses and fan clutch. X2, that problem is typically caused by a bad fan clutch causing the fan to not pull enough air through the radiator when you're idling/sitting still. Driving forces air through the radiator which is why yours is not overheating while driving.The other common cause of overheating in jeeps is caked on mud and dirt from a previous trip through mud. My engine light came on with a P0128 (temp not reaching running temp within 15 mins). The temp gauge started climbing and bouncing between 3/4 and half.The hood still comes up a couple inches. The Daystar latches (for about $30) do the trick nicely. I'll order another set of those tomorrow. This has happened twice in the past two weeks. The TJ has 90,000 miles on it and it appears that the water pump and hoses (and likely thermostat) were changed recently. Coolant level is full and there are no leaks. Engine bay and radiator are immaculate. Jeep was never an off-roader. When I purchased it it was pretty much stock.

When the jeep is hot (running for a while), turn off the jeep. Go under the hood and spin the clutch fan by hand, if it moving freely (no resistance) then you have a bad clutch fan.
