In addition to buffing through spells and performance, aid another can be quite good, especially at low levels. Now normally, you need to be in melee. Being in melee certainly can work for a bard, but most bards I see tend to avoid it. Now a ranged build around aid another can be quite good, but can be feat intensive.

You might have Military Lore, Sailing Lore, Vampire Lore, or any similar subcategory of the skill. You might even wade into the thick of things with them. You gain the Martial Performance feat and add fear to your spell repertoire.
