Hirsch is more mountainous and contains few lakes. Layton is more flat and contains many lakes. In my opinion Layton has many more animals than Hirsch. Layton is easier to hunt. Just park yourself near a lake. Then call and wait. Animals in Layton readily respond to calls, except black bear.

Sure you can use the Mosin but if you want the best power and penetration possible for an animal it's better to use the maximum weapon for it. You could even swap it for a bow/crossbow.
