Zero issues after cases and cases of buck, slugs and birdshot. That said a 500 combo with 18.5" and 28" barrels is the more versatile and better made firearm.

887 suffers from extraction issues related to the bolt. If I am right, the 887 cna handle 3.5" shells, where the 870 express can only handle 3" shells. 3.5" shells do have some merit in duck hunting any maybe to some extent turkey hunting. I successfuly hunt turkey with just 2 3/4" shells out of a 12 gauge.

If you are familiar with the gun the safety location will come second nature. I have never got by thumb hung under the shell lifter either. Both Remington and Mossberg are fine pieces. Either one will serve you well. I just prefer the 870 over the 500 series Mossberg, and I like the M37 Ithaca better than the 870.
