It is definitely odd and hasn't been attempted since the 80's. For those who don't know the rule: Basically if you have a fair catch on a punt or kick, you can tell the refs that you want a fair catch kick and you can kick a field goal from where you caught it. There is no snap so you get to be 7 yards closer and the defense can't block it.
