People who have the time to relevel gems would use level 80 augment gems, then when they get higher, they'd level new gems to help them get even higher. You can wait and level them up higher. It slows you down but takes less time to get all your slots done once.It will be destroyed forever. So chose carefully which item you augment and with which level you will augment it. You can of course overwrite any augmented item with a new one, but you need to level a new gem from level 0 on. Edit: And don't use the wrong stat increasing gems!
