Hello! I am new to investing and figuring out how to allocate my assets. I would like to invest in some bond index funds with low expenses but I'm not really sure where to start. Fidelity has a list (below). I was wondering what is the SP500/large cap or total market index fund equivalent for bonds? Aug 19, 2020 · FMBIX : SEC Yield 1.31%, Duration 5.88 yrs; I calculate the tax-equivalent yield of FMBIX to be: TEY of FMBIX = 1.31% / ( 1 - 0.24) = 1.72%; So based solely on TEY, it looks like FMBIX beats FXNAX by 0.41%, and it should be my choice if I'm comfortable with the lower diversification and other risks that accompany munis. For various reasons though I’d still like consider pursuing holding such as fund anyway because I like the “lack” of volatility in such investments. I liked FTBFX (I have Fidelity), but I’ve been made aware that muni bonds may be better in a taxable account, such as FMBIX. Would holding FMBIX be better tax-wise than FTBFX?Thanks! This was immensely helpful -- it wasn't clear at first glance that these the ones I chose were actively managed vs. FMBIX was index. Given the Bogleheads philosophy, I should definitely be valuing the low-cost index over the actively managed one -- especially if they're both aiming for the same type of asset.
